From day one, it was clear something special was happening
at the Monterey County Fairgrounds. Founded in 1958 by
San Francisco jazz radio broadcaster Jimmy Lyons, the first
Monterey Jazz Festival featured artists like Dizzy Gillespie,
Louis Armstrong, Sonny Rollins and Billie Holiday, to name
just a few. Now the longest running jazz festival in the world
takes to the road with a new generation of jazz luminaries.
Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christian McBride, Ambrose Akinmusire,
Chris Potter, Benny Green and Lewis Nash carry forward the
legacy of energy, talent, joy and expression that have made
Monterey a pilgrimage site for tried-and-true jazz fans for 55
years—and running.
